John Somerscales

I have painted and drawn since I was a child, but at school became interested in the history of art and studied the subject at Nottingham University before eventually settling into a career in a design studio producing books for the educational publishing market.

Today, while still doing some design work, I spend most of my time painting. I prefer to work on location whenever possible, sometimes producing sketches and tonal studies for later development, sometimes starting or even completing a picture en plein air to make best use of direct light and atmosphere.

I also teach adult education classes and stage demonstrations in watercolour, which is my specialist medium.
