John Somerscales

I consider myself essentially an observational artist, inspired by a passion for light and a desire to capture its effects on landscape and townscape. Working in oil and watercolour, I spend much of my time painting and sketching en plein air. Sometimes the endeavour produces finished paintings; sometimes it generates ideas and references for projects to be developed in the studio.

Each of my intimate views of the landscape represents a split second in time. Capturing the moment in this way requires a lightness of touch and an economy of brushwork, especially when working in watercolour. My drawing skills, honed in my former work in graphic art and design, enable me to tackle often complicated subjects with confidence that evocative and expressive brushwork is underpinned by sound construction.

I have run painting courses in community education as well as at the Oxford Summer School and the Ashmolean Museum. I am a member of Oxford Art Society and have exhibited with the Pure Watercolour Society, and have had several articles on painting techniques published in The Artist magazine.

Please get in touch if you are interested in any of my work or would like a commission undertaking.
